Organic sulphur – methylsulphonylmethane
In alternative medicine, organic sulphur is considered a natural antioxidant and painkiller, among other things – it is said to be used for many purposes. However, its scientific mode of action is not fully understood, which is why there is much controversy among experts. The human body consists of 0.2 percent sulphur – it is therefore a natural substance that is often used for detoxification purposes. But what is really behind it?
What is organic sulphur?
Organic sulphur or MSM sulphur refers to the substance methylsulphonylmethane or dimethylsulphone. It is therefore an organic sulphur compound that belongs to the sulphone class of substances. The organic substance occurs naturally in the human and animal body. Dimethyl sulfone also occurs in plant organisms. Humans ingest the organic sulphur MSM through their diet. Cow’s milk, for example, contains a very high concentration of 3.3 ppm.
As organic sulphur can have a range of chemical and pharmacological properties, it is often used as a dietary supplement in the form of MSM capsules or powder. Various researchers have set themselves the task of investigating the effect and function of methylsulfonylmethane.
There are many reports and indications in the literature that it could be used for pain, joint problems, chronic complaints, allergies or inflammatory reactions.
It is also used for horses. Various suppliers provide these instructions for use:
External application (for mite infestation/mauke): Mix two parts olive oil with one part sulphur flower and apply to the affected skin/coat areas. We recommend using gloves for this. Please do not apply to the horse’s mucous membranes.
For internal use: The feeding recommendation is 2 g per day for a pony and 4 g per day for a large horse
