Straight feed for birds The main cultivation areas for yellow foxtail millet are in China, Central Asia, Afghanistan and India. It is also cultivated in South-East Asia, South-East Europe, South Africa and Australia. It grows on nutrient-rich clay and sandy soils. For many birds, there seems to be nothing tastier than foxtail millet and it is accepted with enthusiasm. Yellow foxtail millet is an unthreshed crop. The seeds, i.e. grains, are therefore still in their natural “packaging”. This means that the birds still have to work a little for their food. They have to pick the seeds individually from the fruit, i.e. the cob. To a certain extent, this is therefore a near-natural food intake. The small millet seeds in particular attract small birds such as sparrows, finches, goldfinches and dunnocks. A tasty treat for all ornamental birds such as budgerigars, cockatiels, exotic birds and parrots. Feeding recommendation: Offer the birds millet in small quantities as a treat. Millet contains relatively little fat. On average, 100 g of millet contains a maximum of 4 g of fat – sunflower seeds, on the other hand, contain around 50 g of fat per 100 g. Although millet is comparatively low in fat, it can cause birds to become overweight. The reason for this is that many animals often eat it in very large quantities when they have the opportunity. Foxtail millet should therefore only be given in small quantities as an occasional treat. If birds were allowed to eat large quantities of millet every day, many of them would spurn the other food and only eat the popular millet. This would soon lead to a considerable lack of nutrients because the diet would be too one-sided.
