Biological pest control to prevent and control blood mites in aviaries, cages, terrariums or stables. The Refona Mite Booster® cartridge is a capsule containing a quantity of predatory mites. The humidity inside the cartridge is optimal for the development of the Dutchy’s ®. Use on chickens and poultry, pigeons, aviary birds, reptiles and snakes. Also against “tropical bird mites” (Ornithonyssus bursa). You may suddenly notice an increase in harmful mites a few days after applying Dutchy’s®. You may see the pests in places where you would not normally see them. This means that the predatory mites have already chased the pests out of their hiding places. After a few weeks, the predatory mites will have destroyed the harmful mites. However, if there is still no improvement after three weeks, it makes sense to order Dutchy’s® again and apply it again. It may well be that the infestation was larger than you originally thought.
In principle, Dutchy’s® can always solve the problem if you give them enough time and apply them in sufficient quantities. Predatory mites are very effective and ground-dwelling predators with a very wide range of prey, including bird and blood mites. They are therefore ideal for use in terrariums, aviaries, chicken coops etc. if no insecticides are to be used and biological control is the aim. The development from egg to sexually mature beneficial insect takes about 12 days (at 25°C). The eggs and nymphs are white, whereas adults are brown and can be up to 1 mm in size. A predatory mite consumes 5 blood mites per day and lays up to 3 eggs per day. An adult predatory mite lives for an average of 6 weeks. In this way, the biological balance is adjusted in favor of the predatory mites but to the detriment of the blood mites. Visible success can be seen after just a few days. In many cases, the blood mites are completely eradicated within a few weeks. If there is a very high initial infestation, we recommend a follow-up treatment with more predatory mites after approx. 6 weeks. The predatory mite can starve for several weeks (in the absence of prey). Preventative use is therefore possible. The control of snake mites, spider mites (Tarantula is very often infested) or mites has also proved very effective in terrariums.
